What does a company secretary do every day?

A fictional company has a board meeting next week. The governance team checks which documents are needed, prepares an agenda, records decisions accurately and tracks follow-up obligations. A company secretary’s professional role is different from an office assistant’s title. Rules must be checked against current law and institute guidance.

Where the work happens

  • Company secretarial and governance departments
  • Professional practice settings subject to applicable practice rights

Licence and physical requirements

Professional membership and any practice rights are governed by ICSI and applicable law. Check the current conditions before using a professional designation.

What skills does a company secretary use?

  • Rule reading: Locate the current provision and its applicability before advising a team.
  • Meeting records: Write clear minutes without adding decisions that were never made.
  • Compliance tracking: Assign an owner and evidence to an obligation rather than merely a reminder.

What are the first roles in this career?

A starting role usually offers a narrower task with supervision. In the first years, keep evidence of careful work, ask for feedback and learn the limits of your responsibility. Wider responsibility depends on learning, qualifications, the organisation and opportunities; there is no fixed five-year promotion ladder.

  • Secretarial trainee: An illustrative responsibility to develop in this role: Locate the current provision and its applicability before advising a team. The title and permitted scope vary by organisation and qualifications.
  • Company secretary: An illustrative responsibility to develop in this role: Write clear minutes without adding decisions that were never made. The title and permitted scope vary by organisation and qualifications.
  • Governance and compliance lead: An illustrative responsibility to develop in this role: Assign an owner and evidence to an obligation rather than merely a reminder. The title and permitted scope vary by organisation and qualifications.

What is a common myth about this career?

The assumption: A company secretary mainly types letters and manages appointments.

A fuller view: The professional path concerns corporate governance and compliance. Administrative support is valuable work but is a different role.

Looking ahead: Governance work changes when rules and business structures change. Reliable version checking, accurate records and professional judgement matter more than memorising an old checklist.

If you change your mind: Governance learning also raises questions about law, risk and organisational systems. A move into legal practice requires its own separate qualification.
