What does a user experience designer do every day?

A fictional school form is difficult to complete on a shared phone. The designer observes volunteers using a paper version, asks permission before taking notes and traces where they become confused. The team changes the sequence and wording, then tests again. Attractive screens alone would not solve the problem.

What skills does a user experience designer use?

  • User research: Observe a consenting participant without suggesting the answer.
  • Interaction design: Make the next action understandable and errors recoverable.
  • Accessibility: Check whether people can use the flow with different needs and inputs.

What are the first roles in this career?

A starting role usually offers a narrower task with supervision. In the first years, keep evidence of careful work, ask for feedback and learn the limits of your responsibility. Wider responsibility depends on learning, qualifications, the organisation and opportunities; there is no fixed five-year promotion ladder.

  • Junior user experience designer: An illustrative responsibility to develop in this role: Observe a consenting participant without suggesting the answer. The title and permitted scope vary by organisation and qualifications.
  • Product designer: An illustrative responsibility to develop in this role: Make the next action understandable and errors recoverable. The title and permitted scope vary by organisation and qualifications.
  • Design research or product lead: An illustrative responsibility to develop in this role: Check whether people can use the flow with different needs and inputs. The title and permitted scope vary by organisation and qualifications.

What is a common myth about this career?

The assumption: User experience is only choosing colours and fonts.

A fuller view: Visual design is one part. Understanding needs, structuring information, testing interactions and fixing accessibility barriers are also important.

Looking ahead: Interfaces change, but a useful design still needs a clear problem and evidence from people. Compare research, interaction and visual-design responsibilities, and show your reasoning in a portfolio.

If you change your mind: You can explore communication design, research or front-end development. Compare the daily tasks rather than assuming all digital-design titles mean the same thing.
