Electronics engineer

Design, build and test circuits, sensors and embedded devices that turn physical signals into useful information or control.

You can start after Class 10, Class 12 or graduation. Routes covered here: electronics degree pathway and electronics diploma pathway. Entrance exams on these routes: Haryana diploma admission, JEE Main, JEECUP Group A and Uttarakhand JEEP, engineering. Typical work settings: electronics design and testing laboratories and embedded-product and manufacturing teams. Skills used include signal interpretation, system testing and hardware-software teamwork.

What does an electronics engineer do every day?

In a fictional school weather station, a sensor sometimes sends impossible values. The engineer compares its readings with a reference, reviews the connection diagram and asks whether the fault is in the sensor, power or software. The result is a test log, not a guess disguised as a fix.

Where the work happens

  • Electronics design and testing laboratories
  • Embedded-product and manufacturing teams

Which school subjects matter in Class 9 to 12?

School subjects by class
ClassWhat helps
Class 9 and 10Practise electricity, graphs, number systems and simple programming. Explain how a physical signal becomes data without treating every reading as correct.
Class 11 and 12Class 11-12 Physics topics such as current electricity and semiconductor devices, plus Mathematics and any computer science you take, build a base for electronics study. Compare the actual subject and admission rules for each route before choosing.

How do you become an electronics engineer after Class 10 or 12?

Main route

Electronics degree pathway

  1. Check current subject combinations and the programme laboratory curriculum.
  2. Read the current recognition and admission document, and record unanswered questions before applying.
  3. Complete the relevant learning and supervised practical requirements; separately check the scope and conditions of the intended role.

Entrance exams on this route: JEE Main

If you change your mind: An interest in code may lead to embedded software; an interest in careful measurement may lead to testing. Compare the actual training instead of relying on the title.

Another route

Electronics diploma pathway

  1. Each state runs its own polytechnic diploma admission (for example JEECUP in Uttar Pradesh, JEEP in Uttarakhand and HSTES admission in Haryana); check your state's current notice and any later lateral-entry conditions separately.
  2. Read the current recognition and admission document, and record unanswered questions before applying.
  3. Complete the relevant learning and supervised practical requirements; separately check the scope and conditions of the intended role.

What skills does an electronics engineer use?

  • Signal interpretation: Spot an implausible measurement before a device acts on it.
  • System testing: Vary one condition and record whether the behaviour changes.
  • Hardware-software teamwork: Explain an interface clearly to the person writing the code.

What are the first roles in this career?

A starting role usually offers a narrower task with supervision. In the first years, keep evidence of careful work, ask for feedback and learn the limits of your responsibility. Wider responsibility depends on learning, qualifications, the organisation and opportunities; there is no fixed five-year promotion ladder.

  • Electronics test trainee: An illustrative responsibility to develop in this role: Spot an implausible measurement before a device acts on it. The title and permitted scope vary by organisation and qualifications.
  • Embedded systems engineer: An illustrative responsibility to develop in this role: Vary one condition and record whether the behaviour changes. The title and permitted scope vary by organisation and qualifications.
  • Electronics project lead: An illustrative responsibility to develop in this role: Explain an interface clearly to the person writing the code. The title and permitted scope vary by organisation and qualifications.

What is a common myth about this career?

The assumption: Electronics is only assembling gadgets.

A fuller view: Understanding signals, constraints and testing matters as much as assembly. Different roles focus on design, embedded software, testing or production.

Looking ahead: As a device combines sensing, code and communication, failures may cross team boundaries. Compare testing, embedded software and circuit-design tasks to see which questions you want to study more.

If you change your mind: An interest in code may lead to embedded software; an interest in careful measurement may lead to testing. Compare the actual training instead of relying on the title.

  • Cybersecurity analyst

Related work. Protect an organisation's computers, accounts and data by watching for threats, investigating incidents with permission and reducing risk.

  • Electrical engineer

Related work. Plan, design, test and maintain systems that generate, distribute and use electricity, working within documented safety procedures.

  • Mechanical engineer

Related work. Design, test, make and maintain machines and mechanical systems, using physics, maths and careful evidence.

  • Software Engineer

Related work. Turn a user’s need into reliable software, then test and maintain it.
