Disha Edge
Mechanical engineer
Design, test, make and maintain machines and mechanical systems, using physics, maths and careful evidence.
You can start after Class 10, Class 12 or graduation. Routes covered here: engineering degree route and diploma and further-study route. Entrance exams on these routes: Haryana diploma admission, JEE Main, JEECUP Group A and Uttarakhand JEEP, engineering. Typical work settings: design and product-development teams and manufacturing, testing or maintenance settings. Skills used include technical drawing, testing a cause and working with technicians.
Some details need verification. Check the source before making a decision.

What does a mechanical engineer do every day?
A pump in a fictional food-processing unit vibrates more than usual. The engineer reads the maintenance log, compares a drawing with the part, and discusses a safe inspection with technicians. The team records its evidence before proposing a change. Designing a machine also means making it maintainable.

Which school subjects matter in Class 9 to 12?
| Class | What helps |
|---|---|
| Class 9 and 10 | Practise measurement, forces and energy. Draw an object from two views and explain what a missing dimension would prevent someone from making. |
| Class 11 and 12 | Practise measurement, forces and energy. Draw an object from two views and explain what a missing dimension would prevent someone from making. Compare the actual subject and admission rules for each route before making a stream or course decision. |
How do you become a mechanical engineer after Class 10 or 12?
Main route
Engineering degree route
- Check the current mechanical-engineering subject rules, then study the recognised programme with supervised projects.
- Read the current recognition and admission document, and record unanswered questions before applying.
- Complete the relevant learning and supervised practical requirements; separately check the scope and conditions of the intended role.
- Published duration
- 4 years
- Provider type
- Government and private
- Cost band

Subject rules by board
| Boards | Subjects | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE, CISCE, UP Board, Uttarakhand Board, Haryana Board | Physics, Mathematics | For NITs and other institutes that admit through JEE Main and JoSAA, Class 12 must include Physics, Mathematics and a language, plus one of Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology or a technical vocational subject (JEE Main 2026 bulletin). State counselling and private institutes may use different subject lists and minimum marks, so check your target institute's current notice. |
Entrance exams on this route: JEE Main
If you change your mind: Drawing, materials and process knowledge can support manufacturing planning or technical sales. A different role may still require separate training.

Another route
Diploma and further-study route
- A 3-year engineering diploma usually starts after Class 10 through your state's polytechnic admission, for example JEECUP in Uttar Pradesh, JEEP in Uttarakhand or HSTES diploma admission in Haryana. Other states run their own admission, so check your state's technical education board. Some states, including Uttar Pradesh, allow Class 12 science or vocational students lateral entry to the second year. A diploma is not the same qualification as a degree; check any later B.Tech lateral-entry rule separately.

What skills does a mechanical engineer use?
- Technical drawing: Show the size and relationship of parts so another person can make or inspect them.
- Testing a cause: Compare evidence before replacing a part that only appears to be faulty.
- Working with technicians: Turn an inspection finding into a clear, safe maintenance instruction.
What are the first roles in this career?
A starting role usually offers a narrower task with supervision. In the first years, keep evidence of careful work, ask for feedback and learn the limits of your responsibility. Wider responsibility depends on learning, qualifications, the organisation and opportunities; there is no fixed five-year promotion ladder.
- Trainee design engineer: An illustrative responsibility to develop in this role: Show the size and relationship of parts so another person can make or inspect them. The title and permitted scope vary by organisation and qualifications.
- Maintenance engineer: An illustrative responsibility to develop in this role: Compare evidence before replacing a part that only appears to be faulty. The title and permitted scope vary by organisation and qualifications.
- Engineering team lead: An illustrative responsibility to develop in this role: Turn an inspection finding into a clear, safe maintenance instruction. The title and permitted scope vary by organisation and qualifications.
What is a common myth about this career?
The assumption: Mechanical engineering is only repairing vehicles.
A fuller view: It can involve mechanisms, manufacturing, thermal systems, testing and maintenance. A repair is one kind of problem, not the whole field.
Looking ahead: Compare a design role with a plant-maintenance role: they may use related science but face different constraints, schedules and practical tasks. Ask to see a typical task description before choosing a specialisation.
If you change your mind: Drawing, materials and process knowledge can support manufacturing planning or technical sales. A different role may still require separate training.
