Methodology
How the college directory is built
Disha Stars has two kinds of college page: register listings built from official registers, and verified profiles with more detail. This page explains both, with the counts and dates from the current data.

The official registers we use
A register listing shows only what the official registers publish. When an institution appears in more than one register, its listing shows every source it was found in.
Programme families on register listings. A family comes from the register that states it (AICTE, NMC, PCI, the sector regulators, the AISHE standalone type) or, for the rest, from a discipline the registered name states (“X College of Nursing”); listing pages say which:
- Architecture: 416 institutions
- General degree (arts, science, commerce): 9,663 institutions
- AYUSH (ayurveda, homoeopathy, unani, siddha): 1,391 institutions
- Dental: 391 institutions
- Applied arts and design: 81 institutions
- Education and teacher training: 9,879 institutions
- Engineering and technology: 7,057 institutions
- Hotel management: 466 institutions
- Law: 1,914 institutions
- Management: 8,379 institutions
- MBBS: 832 institutions
- Computer applications: 5,639 institutions
- Nursing: 8,836 institutions
- Paramedical: 3,131 institutions
- Pharmacy: 6,528 institutions
- Planning: 26 institutions
- Polytechnic diploma: 6,253 institutions
- Veterinary science: 159 institutions
What a register listing shows
Only what the registers state: name, district and state, the type of institution, management as AISHE records it (or “Not stated in the registers”), the affiliating university with a link to its page, the year of establishment, rural or urban location, the AISHE code, the programme families and levels, approved intake, each approval with its register, edition and the date we read it, NIRF 2025 rank where one exists, and the official website. An AISHE listing is not a recognition, and the page says so. Each listing also links to the other colleges of the same university and district, and lists what to check before you apply for its courses (for example NCTE recognition for B.Ed, Indian Nursing Council suitability for nursing, Bar Council of India approval for law), with a status only when we hold that register.
What a verified profile means
Verified profiles come from the Disha Stars college directory and carry more detail than a register listing: the listed fee range across courses, the listed highest package where there is one, the courses offered, a map location and the official website. They show a “NIRF and registers checked” badge, because that is what was checked. The fees and packages are as listed in the Disha Stars directory when we read it on 2 October 2026; we have not confirmed them with each college. Before publishing them we:
- merged duplicate listings into one page (53 old addresses now redirect to the right profile);
- matched NIRF ranks to the official NIRF 2025 lists, and hid any rank that did not match (80 profiles show a NIRF 2025 rank);
- removed website links that pointed to a different institution (382 profiles have an official website on file);
- shown fees as the listed range across all courses, never as a yearly figure (386 profiles have a fee range).
The badge means the record has been through these checks. It does not mean we have visited the campus, and it is not a recommendation. Fees and packages change, so confirm them with the college before you apply.
Which pages we ask search engines to index
Every register listing can be opened, searched and browsed on Disha Stars. We ask search engines to index a listing only when it carries facts of its own from the official registers, so a search result never leads to a page that just repeats one register row. The others are marked “noindex, follow”: they stay on the site and their links are followed, and a listing moves into the index on its own when a register update gives it enough facts. Disha Stars profiles are always indexed.
We count these register facts for each listing: AISHE code, management, year of establishment, rural or urban location, college or standalone type, affiliating university, official website, approved intake, UGC 2(f) or 12B status, NIRF 2025 rank, and each regulator approval (UGC, AICTE, NMC, PCI, NDC, COA, NCH, NCHMCT, VCI). A listing is indexed when it is any one of these:
- a university on the UGC list or with an AISHE university code (1,246 listings);
- ranked in NIRF 2025 (571 more);
- in 2 or more official registers with at least 3 register facts (18,085 more);
- on one regulator's list with at least 4 register facts, such as an MBBS college with its NMC permission, intake, year and university (286 more).
A college that only the AISHE directory lists is not indexed yet, however complete its record. One AISHE row gives every such page the same few facts, so the pages would read much alike. They stay on the site, in search and in the lists, and link to their university; they join the index when a second register or a ranking adds facts of their own.
| Register listings indexed | 20,188 |
|---|---|
| Register listings browsable but not indexed | 57,855 |
| Median register facts on an indexed listing | 8 |
| Disha Stars profiles (all indexed) | 386 |
What we do not show, and why
- Fees on register listings: the registers do not publish them. A counsellor can help you get them from the college.
- Reviews and star ratings: we have not collected any, and we do not make them up.
- Words like "top" or "best" without a source: we show NIRF ranks with their year and category instead.
- Admission chances or rank predictions: these depend on each year's applicants, so we do not guess them.
How results are ordered
You can sort college results by NIRF rank, fees, listed package, distance or name. Admission partner status is not a sort option; the admission partners page explains the two places where it is used.
Updates and errors
Every college page shows the date of its data. Approvals can change from year to year, so check the current status for your course before you apply. If you spot a mistake, report it here.
