· Source: Amar Ujala

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has updated the scheme of studies for classes 9 and 10 by removing Environmental Education and making Vocational Education mandatory. These new rules will apply to students who are in Class 9 during the 2026-27 session and will appear for Class 10 board exams in 2027-28.

Major Changes in CBSE Scheme of Studies

The Central Board of Secondary Education has introduced significant modifications for the 2026-27 academic session for classes 9 and 10. Environmental Education has been completely removed from the Class 10 syllabus, while Vocational Education has been made compulsory for students. CBSE has sent instructions regarding these updates to schools.

  • Environmental Education has been removed from the main Class 10 curriculum.
  • In Class 9, the subject 'Individuals in Society' and CTMI modules will no longer be part of the curriculum.
  • Vocational Education will be compulsory for both Class 9 and Class 10 students.
  • Other optional subjects available under the 2025-26 academic plan will continue in Class 9 (2026-27) and Class 10 (2027-28).

Who It Is For

The new scheme applies to students studying in Class 9 during the 2026-27 academic session, who will appear for the Class 10 board examinations in 2027-28. Students who are currently in Class 10 during the 2026-27 session will not be affected by these changes and will appear for their board exams under the old system.

Vocational Education and Assessment Details

For compulsory Vocational Education, students must select either a skill development subject or one of the 22 skill subjects notified by the board. Evaluation will depend on the option chosen by the student:

  • Students opting for a skill development subject will be evaluated internally at the school level.
  • Students choosing one of the 22 skill subjects must appear for an examination in that subject during the Class 10 board exams in 2027-28.

Compulsory Subjects for Class 10 (2027-28)

For the 2027-28 board examinations, CBSE Class 10 students will have five mandatory subjects along with an option to select an additional subject:

  • First Language (R-1)
  • Second Language (R-2)
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • Social Science
  • One optional subject can also be chosen by the student.

What to Do Next

Students currently in Class 9 must keep these revised rules in mind while selecting their subjects. Schools will provide students with all necessary information regarding subject options and board examinations.
