IIT Delhi to Develop AI Tool to Detect Landslide Risks in Hilly Areas
· Source: Amar Ujala
IIT Delhi is developing an Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool funded by DRDO to map and assess landslide risks in mountainous areas. The institute has issued an Expression of Interest inviting industries and startups to partner in the design and development of the platform.
Development of AI Tool by IIT Delhi
IIT Delhi will develop an Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool to detect the threat of landslides and identify high-risk zones in hilly regions. Funded by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), this platform will be established and operated at the institute. The tool aims to map landslide-prone locations and evaluate dangers, enabling administrations and disaster management agencies to prepare in advance and minimize damage.
Collaboration with Industries and Startups
To design and develop the tool, IIT Delhi has invited proposals from industries and startups by issuing an Expression of Interest (EoI). IIT Delhi will serve as the principal investigator and lead institute for the project, while the selected industry or startup partners will act as co-principal investigators responsible for technology development and implementation.
Interactive Maps and Dashboard Features
The platform will integrate information from various datasets and AI models. Key features will include:
- Creation of interactive maps and dashboards to view and interpret combined data.
- Options for users to access risk-zone information and generate customized reports as needed.
- Facilities to track data analysis processes, ensuring systematic execution and easier interpretation of results.
Support for Disaster Management
Landslide risks depend on multiple factors, including the slope of mountains, soil structure, and geographic conditions of the area. The proposed AI tool will analyze data related to these factors to pinpoint areas with a high risk of landslides. This information will assist authorities in deciding where to increase monitoring, issue warnings, arrange rescue preparations, and plan relief and rescue operations effectively.
