NMC Plans to Add Around 5,000 MD and MS Seats Across Medical Colleges

The National Medical Commission (NMC) is preparing to add around 5,000 new seats for MD, MS, and other PG medical courses to address the shortage of specialist doctors. More than 150 medical colleges have applied to increase these seats ahead of NEET PG 2026.
Expansion of MD and MS Seats
The National Medical Commission (NMC) is preparing to increase nearly 5,000 new seats for MD, MS, and other postgraduate medical courses. According to sources, the commission may take a decision regarding this soon. The maximum number of new seats is expected to be added in states such as Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana. Last year, the NMC approved 4,201 new MD-MS (broad specialty) seats in private medical colleges, which were included in the NEET PG counselling.
NEET PG 2026 Schedule
The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has completed the application process for NEET PG 2026. The exam is the single entrance test for admissions to MD, MS, PG Diploma, Post-MBBS DNB, and direct six-year diploma courses. After the results, PG medical counselling will begin through the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and respective state counselling authorities.
