· Source: Amar Ujala

Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda reviewed the preparations for NEET UG Counselling 2026 and announced key student-friendly measures. Candidates will now need to report physically to their allotted college only once.

Major Reforms in NEET UG Counselling 2026

Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda reviewed the preparations for NEET UG Counselling 2026 on Tuesday with the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), and other agencies. He directed officials to ensure the counselling process is transparent, merit-based, technology-driven, and student-friendly. Preparations regarding the counselling schedule, IT infrastructure, cyber security, grievance redressal, and candidate facilities were reviewed.

Freeze and Float Process and Physical Reporting

In a major relief this year, candidates will have to complete physical reporting at the college only once. The process after seat allotment will work as follows:

  • Candidates can choose either the 'Freeze' or 'Float' option online after seat allotment.
  • Candidates who select 'Freeze' must visit the allotted college within the specified timeframe for original document verification and admission fee payment.
  • Candidates who select 'Float' can continue to participate in subsequent rounds for a better seat.
  • For candidates choosing 'Float', document verification will be done online; they do not need to visit a college or submit fees at this stage.
  • Candidates will only need to visit the institution to complete admission formalities once their final seat is allotted after the third round.

Online Seat Resignation and NRI Admission Changes

MCC has introduced an online seat resignation facility, allowing candidates to resign their allotted seats through the MCC portal within the prescribed rules and deadlines without visiting the college. Additionally, the admission process under the NRI category has been made completely digital. All documents must now be uploaded on the portal and will be verified online, ending the previous system of sending documents via email.

Relief for PwBD Candidates

The number of assessment centres for benchmark disability (PwBD) candidates has been increased from 16 to 61. The certificate issued by the medical board will now be termed an 'Eligibility Certificate'. An Appellate Disability Assessment Board has also been arranged for candidates who are dissatisfied with the medical board's decision.

Cyber Security and Helpline Facilities

Cyber security arrangements have been strengthened in collaboration with the National Informatics Centre (NIC). MCC has launched a 24x7 toll-free helpline number and an email address to assist candidates.
