The Central Board of Secondary Education has clarified new rules for the Class 10 board exams in 2028, introducing an additional skill subject option alongside five main subjects. This change allows skill subject marks to help students pass if they fail in Mathematics, Science, or Social Science under set conditions.
CBSE Class 10 Board Exam 2028 Rules
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has outlined new regulations for the 2028 Class 10 board exams. Under these rules, students will get the option of an additional skill subject along with five main subjects. Marks from this skill subject can help a student pass if they fail in Mathematics, Science, or Social Science, subject to board rules and conditions.
Who It Is For
These changes apply to students who study in Class 9 during the 2026-27 academic session and will appear for the Class 10 board exams in 2028. The board stated that these rules will not apply to current Class 10 students.
Subjects Excluded from Curriculum
CBSE informed schools that certain subjects will not be part of the curriculum for Class 9 in 2026-27 and Class 10 in 2027-28 according to the plan for implementing the new curriculum:
- Individuals in Society
- CT and AI Module
- Environmental Education
Compulsory Subjects Structure
In the Class 10 board exams, five subjects will be compulsory: two languages, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science. However, students will have to study a total of nine compulsory subjects overall, which include a third language, Art Education, Physical Education and health-related subjects, along with vocational education. Vocational education will be mandatory for all students, with the choice to pick either 'Skill Development' or one of 22 skill subjects specified by the board.
Skill Subject Options and Evaluation
CBSE has provided 22 skill subject options, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Science, Information Technology, Financial Markets, Healthcare, and Design Thinking. The assessment format depends on the option chosen:
- Students choosing one of the 22 skill subjects must sit for a board examination in Class 10. Marks and grades will appear on the marksheet, and certificates under the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) will be awarded.
- Students choosing 'Skill Development' will not sit for a board exam for this subject. Instead, internal assessment will be conducted at the school level. A school certificate will be awarded upon securing at least 33 percent marks.
