· Source: Amar Ujala
The Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections, which began in 1954, have served as a platform for shaping prominent leaders in Delhi and national politics over the last seven decades. Several former student leaders have progressed to become councillors, MLAs, MPs, Union Ministers, and the Chief Minister of Delhi.
DUSU as a Political Platform
Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections take place on the university campus, but their impact extends to Delhi's politics and the national stage. Since starting in 1954, these elections have provided a political platform for leaders of various ideologies over seven decades. Many student leaders from DUSU later advanced to become councillors, MLAs, MPs, Union Ministers, and Chief Ministers.
From Student Union to Delhi Government
A key political milestone from DUSU is the current Chief Minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta. She was the DUSU Secretary and later served as President in 1996-97. She transitioned into municipal politics, serving as a councillor three times, and became the Chief Minister after being elected as MLA from Shalimar Bagh in 2025. This marks the first time in DUSU history that a student leader has become the Chief Minister of Delhi. Additionally, Delhi Government's Education Minister Ashish Sood was the DUSU President in 1988-89.
Prominent National and State Leaders from DUSU
DUSU has produced several notable leaders who handled significant roles in national and state politics:
