IIT Ropar Introduces Product and Startup-Based PhD Model

· Source: Amar Ujala

IIT Ropar has launched a new product and startup-based PhD model where scholars can complete their degree without writing a traditional long thesis. Researchers can earn their degree by securing a patent, launching a startup, or transferring technology to an established company.

New PhD Model at IIT Ropar

IIT Ropar has introduced a new product and startup-based PhD model. According to the institute, this is the first such model among Indian IITs. Instead of writing a traditional long thesis, researchers will have the option to develop a useful product, obtain a patent, or bring technology to the market to solve real-world problems. Professor Rajeev Ahuja, Director of IIT Ropar, stated that scholars following this route will not be required to write a conventional PhD thesis. Associate Dean (Post Graduate and Research) Sarang Gumfekar noted that researchers will be encouraged to create products that can be sold in the market or resolve practical problems.

Three Options to Earn a PhD Degree

Under the new model, scholars can choose one of three practical pathways to complete their PhD based on their interest and research work:

  • Obtaining a Patent: Scholars work on a new technology, device, or solution, file for a patent, and work toward getting it approved.
  • Starting a Startup: Researchers turn their idea into a useful product, launch their own startup, and sell the product in the commercial market.
  • Technology Transfer: Scholars transfer their developed technology to an established company, allowing the company to manufacture products at scale while opening royalty opportunities for the researcher.

Details on Revenue and Academic Evaluation

During discussions, Associate Dean Sarang Gumfekar cited an example of developing and selling a product with a target of earning Rs 10 lakh. However, this earning target has not been specified as a formal or mandatory rule for all researchers. Earning Rs 10 lakh alone does not automatically grant a degree. Complete academic regulations, eligibility criteria, and detailed evaluation processes will be clarified through the institute's official rules.
